Adele dominated the Brit Awards 2016 winning four accolades – best British female solo artist, best album, best single and the Global Success award.
To top off her evening Adele closed the Brits show by performing “When We Were Young” but despite her four Brits
awards the Brits 2016 show was rightly dominated by an emotional tribute to David Bowie, led by Annie Lennox and his friend Gary Oldman. Annie Lennox described David Bowie, who died of cancer last month, as a “a quintessential visionary” and “the ultimate iconoclast.” Gary Oldman then accepted a Brits icon award on behalf of the singer and his family stating: “David you were mortal, but your potential was superhuman and your music lives on”. David Bowie’s band then performed an instrumental medley of his hits, before New Zealand singer Lorde joined them to sing “Life On Mars”.
The Brit Awards 2016 ceremony was opened by Coldplay, who according to the BBC website “gave a colourful, floral performance of their single Hymn For The Weekend, showering the audience with confetti petals as they played on one of two separate stages at London’s O2 arena”. The problem the Record Press author has is that I find Coldplay bland, banal, safe and utterly colourless, which is somewhat ironic as their biggest hit is arguably “Yellow”.
To compound the felony in my eyes Coldplay then picked up the Brits award for best British group – making them the most successful band in the ceremony’s history. Coldplay now have nine trophies, although falling well short of Robbie Williams’ 17 Brit awards.
My highlight of the Brit Awards 2016 ceremony has to be Kylie Minogue bringing some panto to the evening, masquerading as Widow Twankey. How the mighty fall…….
