I was pleasantly surprised when I heard that Gilbert O’Sullivan had released a new single “No Way” and even more pleasantly surprised to hear it being broadcast regularly on the Radio 2 playlist.
It’s good to hear Gilbert O’Sullivan on our radio airwaves once again because for those of the Record Press author’s vintage, Gilbert O’Sullivan is evocative of a time and a place many moons ago.
Every time I hear a Gilbert O’Sullivan ditty, I’m automatically transported back to Sunday lunchtimes in the family kitchen in the early 1970s – Mum cooking the Sunday Roast, Dad reading the Sunday Express at the worktop and “Two-Way Family Favourites” on Radio 2 providing the soundtrack to this scene of middle class, bourgeois domestic bliss.
And Gilbert O’Sullivan was very much part of the staple diet on a Sunday in the Sterland household, along with the joint of beef or leg of lamb!! Gilbert O’Sullivan was constantly requested on “Two-Way Family Favourites”; his easy listening, catchy tunes being popular with all generations. It could be said that Gilbert O’Sullivan has gone from “Two-Way” in the early 1970s to “No Way” in 2016. But either way, he has always done it his way and it’s very good to see Gilbert O’Sullivan back where he belongs – in our homes and in our hearts!!
We shouldn’t underestimate Gilbert O’Sullivan – not only is he an adept pianist and witty wordsmith, but he certainly can hold a tune too as a vocalist. Lest we forget the talent of Gilbert O’Sullivan, here is the Record Press top 5 best Gilbert O’Sullivan songs –
