Record Press recently posted a Top 5 Best Liverpool Bands to mark the city’s recent City of Music Award. However when collating the Top 5 best Liverpool groups, the Record Press author was surprised how relatively easy it was to arrive at that Top 5.

Take the Beatles out of the Liverpool music equation along with a clutch of 1980s bands with ridiculously long and convoluted names like Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Echo & The Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes and A Flock of Seagulls and what else is there?!!

I realise this will not go down well with the good bretheren of Liverpool, but the fact of the matter is that the global, historic and lasting impact and popularity of the Beatles has distorted the reality that Liverpool has not contributed as much to the annals of rock and pop music as you might suppose.

In comparison Liverpool’s neighbour and urban enemy Manchester has contributed a far greater lasting music legacy. No doubt this shock revelation that Manchester wins the “Battle of the Bands” will be seen as divisive but this Top 10 best Manchester bands & their best song will amply prove the point –
