After months of speculation, conjecture and rumour, the Stone Roses have confirmed that they will reform for two gigs in the Summer of 2012 and a possible world tour.

Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani and Reni trouped into a press conference to announce the renaissance of the Stone Roses. Apparently the Stone Roses will perform to 75,000 people at Heaton Park in their home city of Manchester on June 29th and 30th 2012, and have indicated that they intend to write new songs. We are told that this will be a curtain raiser for a world tour, although no specific details have been announced. Tickets go on sale for the Heaton Park gigs on Friday 21st October.

The Stone Roses released their debut album, “The Stone Roses” in 1989. The album was a huge critical and capital success for the group. It was at this juncture that the Stone Roses looked to build on their initial success by signing to a major label – their small, independent record label Silvertone however would not release them from their contract, which began a protracted legal battle that resulted in the Stone Roses signing with Geffen Records in 1991, and then releasing their second album “Second Coming” in 1994. The problem by then was that having been responsible for initiating the “Madchester Movement”, they had fallen off the pace and lost momentum and by 1994 Oasis were breaking through with as much, if not more, passion, power and charisma!! It seemed that the Stone Roses’ “Madchester” ship had sailed, but unfortunately Ian Brown and co were not on it – replaced by Liam and Noel Gallagher on the bridge!!

However nothing will detract from the Stone Roses’ massive influence on a whole generation of Mancunian bands like the Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets and Oasis and therefore the Stone Roses can legitimately claim to have been the catalyst for the whole Indie genre and culture of the 1990s. Without the Stone Roses, there would have been no Britpop!! So indirectly they are to blame for the Spice Girls!! Rarely in the history of music has a group so spectacularly underachieved in terms of a small ( albeit significant ) back catalogue, but had such a profound effect, impact and influence on a generation of musicians!!

Whether or not the Stone Roses manage to hold things together for a decent length of time without self combusting, remains to be seen. But if they do, maybe they will be able to roll back the years and fulfil the potential and promise that we were only able to glimpse at for a few, fleeting years in the early 1990s.
