The Official 2011 Poppy Appeal Single is to be a cover of the Bee Gees’ 1968 No1 hit “I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You”, performed by Robin Gibb and three soldiers. The soldiers are Sergeant Major Gary Chilton, Staff Sergeant Richie Maddocks and Lance Corporal Ryan Idzi.
The single “Ive Gotta Get A Message To You” will be released on 23rd October and naturally royalties will go to the British Legion. Robin Gibb says on his website that the song is appropriate because “it can represent the human emotions of servicemen – or in this case, a single soldier. It’s about being trapped in a corner far from home, brave but scared and thinking of loved ones”. The Bee Gees 1969 hit, “Don’t Forget to Remember” would also have been an appropriate song in the run up to Remembrance Sunday, although the Anti War Protest Movement might opt for “Tragedy”.
If “I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You” reaches No1 in the UK charts, the Bee Gees will have achieved the unprecedented feat of having No1 songs in six consecutive decades. This is no mean feat and is a reflection of the enduring popularity of the Bee Gees, not only in the UK, but globally with record sales in excess of 220 million. Only Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney have outsold the Bee Gees.
The Bee Gees chart career started in the late 1960s with hits like “New York Mining Disaster 1941”, “Massachusetts”, “World”, “Words” and
“First of May”. After a three year absence from the charts, the Bee Gees returned with the Top 5 hits “Jive Talkin’ ” in 1975 and “You Should be Dancing” the following year. However the group was preserved for posterity when they were invited to write and perform the soundtrack for the film “Saturday Night Fever” in 1977. The global success of the film was very much due to a fabulous soundtrack which spawned the hits, “How Deep is your Love”, “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever” and put the Bee Gees at the centre of the burgeoning Disco movement. This success was backed up by further hits in the late 1970s such as “Too Much Heaven”, “Tragedy”, “Love You Inside Out” and “Spirits Having Flown”.
The Bee Gees have never been fashionable or trendy, but they have prevailed for six decades simply because high calibre music, vocals and songwriting transcends time and trends. When it comes to harmonisation, they have few peers – only the Beatles, Abba and probbably The Carpenters can match them!!
