The UK’s entry into the Eurovision Song Contest in 1977 was Mike Moran and Lynsey De Paul’s duet “Rock Bottom”. It seems that 35 years later, that song title has become a self fulfilling prophecy!! After the ignominy of Englebert Humperdinck’s second to last showing in the Eurovision Song Contest, has the time come for the UK to call it a day and withdraw from future competitions? This is not borne out of sour grapes, but we are not operating on a level playing field. The Eurovision Song Contest has become a political minefield and the UK is operating without a mine detector, not to mention an armoured vehicle!!
The fact of the matter is that the UK is despised and villified throughout Europe. I suspect it’s more a form of jealousy from countries
with little charisma and character and even less history!! No doubt the rest of Europe choked at the depth of talent on display at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert!! Along with the USA, the UK still spearheads global music, so why do we allow ourselves to be humiliated every year in the Eurovision Song Contest?!! The UK stands alone in Europe outside the Euro and it’s time we applied the same principle with the Eurovision Song Contest. Let’s face it, it’s nothing more than an amateur kitsch kareoke and the UK is better than that!!
However, it wasn’t always thus………..In the heyday of the Eurovision Song Contest in the 1960s and 1970s, the UK dominated. We dominated the Contest at a time when the competition was based on merit, not politics. In those two decades we had three winners and three runners up. Let’s celebrate The Golden Era of Eurovision, with a Top 10 Best UK Eurovision Song Contest Entries –
