For so long the Monarch in waiting, Prince Charles finally stepped out of the shadows and took centre stage at last night’s Diamond Jubilee Concert. Bringing the metaphorical curtain down on the Diamond Jubilee Concert, Prince Charles paid warm tribute to the Queen and the many music acts that had performed and supported the Diamond Jubilee Concert. However the Prince of Wales played the crowd like an old pro and almost stole the show, when inviting the crowd to cheer loud enough for the Duke of Edinburgh to hear in hospital. The response was thunderous, with a huge roar erupting and thousands of people chanting, “Philip, Philip, Philip.”

Prince Charles’ speech was the finale of a fabulous night of music held in front of Buckingham Palace, which created a perfect backdrop to the stage and light show. The festivities began with the supreme showman, Robbie Williams, who’s rendition of “Let me entertain you”, supported by The Grenadier Guards Band was inspired. There was so much that was good and so much visually to feast your eyes on!!

The Welsh contingent of Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey were imperious and on any other night would have stolen the show with the inspiring “Delilah” and “Diamonds Are Forever” respectively. In truth, all the leading lights delivered excellence – Kylie Minogue was at her superb best as were Stevie Wonder, inevitably singing “Happy Birthday” and Cliff Richard even more inevitably performing “Congratulations”. Elton John appeared to be struggling initially, after his recent illness, but eventually got into his stride culminating with the ultimate crowdpleaser “Crocodile Rock”!!

However the piece de resistance was Madness performing “Our House” on top of Buckingham Palace, with a terraced street, complete with iconic red Routemaster double decker bus and black Hackney cab, superimposed over the facade of the Palace. The grand finale came with Paul McCartney climaxing the show with “Live & Let Die”, supported by a fantastic lighting and pyrotechnic show!! It was a fitting end to a fabulous Diamond Jubilee Concert, and worthy of a Queen who has presided over a nation for six decades, with total durability, diligence, dignity, grace and majesty!! And unlike the Thames Pageant the day before, the Gods smiled down on one of their own, and deemed that the evening would remain dry!!
