How often in music, do we celebrate a 50th anniversary of a band who are still playing, touring and recording? The simple answer is that I can’t think of another instance. The fact of the matter is that the Rolling Stones are virtually defying science by celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year. To mark this auspicious occasion the Rolling Stones are doing a handful of concerts on the back of the release of their new album “Grrr!” and excellent single “Doom and Gloom”.

If there were a dictionary purely dedicated to music, then the definition of “Rolling Stones” would be longevity! For it is 52 years since a chance meeting of childhood acquaintances, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards took place on a train from Dartford. As legend has it Jagger was armed with a collection of blues albums, including The Godfather of Blues, Muddy Waters. At that juncture they discovered a bond that has made them, if not “soul mates”, very much “blues brothers”.

The rest is simply history. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards then went on team up with the enigmatic Brian Jones. Throughout a number of line up changes that have seen Brian Jones, Mick Taylor and Bill Wymark come and go, the entity that is The Rolling Stones, has survived into it’s sixth decade. The pure unadulterated truth is that the musical ensemble we know as the Rolling Stones have survived this long because they have crafted great songs and tunes. A Rolling Stone may gather no moss, but he builds a fantastic back catalogue of music, although the reality of this is that their best work was done between 1960 and 1980.

Every rock band needs a sizzling chemistry between frontman / lead vocalist and lead guitarist to fuel the energy and drive the creativity of the band, and the Rolling Stones are no different! Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have fought and squabbled like brothers, but nevertheless have maintained a great bond and partnership throughout their sibling rivalry. Drummer Charlie Watts and in particular guitarist Ronnie Woods have acted as the glue and the healing agent throughout their most tumultous times.

Over the years I have found my experience with The Rolling Stones to be akin to peeling an onion. Every year just when I think I know all there is to know about them, I discover another layer and another fabulous tune that I was not formerly aware of, and that I grow to love. To date this is the MyFirstRecord.co.uk Top 10 Best Rolling Stones Songs ( but it could easily change again by next week!! ) –
