Seventies pop star and heart throb David Cassidy has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in New York. It’s all a far cry from his pomp between 1972 to 1975 when his pretty boy looks and smile beamed out from many a teenage girl’s bedroom wall in the UK.

David Cassidy was released on $2,500 bail, but faces a felony charge due to a prior conviction for driving under the influence in Florida in 2011. His post pop career life has been something of a car crash since those heady days when he rode high in the UK charts for four years, achieving two No1s “How Can I be Sure” and “Daydreamer” / “The Puppy Song”.

David Cassidy’s show business career started with the TV series “The Partridge Family” in 1970, which then led to a music career as lead vocalist in The Partridge Family spin off group. In 1972 he launched a solo career with great success, but quickly became disillusioned with the music industry and his fame.

The watershed moment came on the 26th May 1974 at a gig at the White City Stadium in London, when a teenage girl was crushed in a stampede at the gate that left 650 fans injured. Soon after that he quit touring and acting in “The Partridge Family” and focussed on recording and song-writing. International success continued for a while, mostly in UK and Germany, where he released three well-received solo albums on the RCA label between 1975 and 1977.

To answer the question David Cassidy posed in 1972, “Could it be forever?”. Well no, sadly it wasn’t to be forever as David’s career quickly faded away. Regrettably David Cassidy, like most teenage pop stars and child actors, wasn’t able to make the transition from teen idol to credible adult artist. But it wasn’t for the want of trying. Although not comfortable with fame, David Cassidy has always desired to be taken seriously as a singer / songwriter and deserved to be.

The Record Press author thinks that it’s a great shame David Cassidy was not able to sustain a career in music as I always thought that his ballads were much more than just teeny bopper music and certainly on the right side of saccharine. Whilst contemporary teen idol Donny Osmond pumped out pure bubble gum, epitomised by “Puppy Love”, David Cassidy songs were well crafted, beautifully arranged and well delivered vocally. Along with a haunting melancholy in the lyrics and melody, there was a sophistication and intelligent mind behind the pretty boy looks.
