When did you last forage around in your attic? Amongst the luggage of your lifetime, may be seven inch wide round pieces of black plastic, that change the remainder of your life!! In recent years, vinyl albums and singles have started to achieve high value in auction houses around the world, sending the prices of rare classics beyond the attic and through the roof!!

Record Collector magazine have just compiled a list of the 51 most collectable vinyl records. A rare recording of “God Save the Queen” by the Sex Pistols has been named the most valuable vinyl record of all time, with experts saying it is worth £8,000. The single was originally produced by A&M Records. But the group were dropped by the label before it was released and most of the copies were destroyed. The song eventually became a hit on the Virgin label, reaching No2 in the charts in June 1977 – an anti-establishment message designed to co-incide with the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.

An ultra-rare first pressing of The Beatles’ first album, “Please Please Me”, is the second most collectable vinyl record, valued at around £3,500, although mint copies can realise a greater value. First editions of debut self-titled releases from the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin that are in good condition are now worth upwards of £1,000.

Record Collector magazine has compiled the list of the best vinyl records for investors. Record Collector Magazine Editor Ian McCann points out: “There is something of an investment market in mint condition copies of iconic albums. The problem is people love them and play them to death, making it rare to find them in mint condition”.

In 2009, a rare copy of unreleased 1965 single Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) by Frank Wilson was sold for £25,742. This particular song is a must for all Northern Soul fans, which will have undoubtedly increased it’s value.

The most valuable vinyl record of all time, valued at £150,000 is “That’ll Be The Day” by The Quarrymen, the band that became The Beatles. There is only one copy in the world, which Paul McCartney owns. So unless you are a potential beneficiary in Paul McCartney’s will, it is highly unlikely to come into your possesion, however wealthy you are!!
