It was reported last week that if Prince William has his way, the first song to be played at the Royal Wedding Reception at Buckingham Palace on Friday as he leads his bride Kate Middleton on to the dance floor, will be Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”. Apparently it is a song that has always been close to William’s heart, as his mother, Princess Diana was a big fan of Neil Diamond.
The sounds and songs of Neil Diamond would have reverberated around the rooms of Kensington Palace, throughout Prince William’s childhood. Princess Diana was a massive fan and attended many Neil Diamond concerts, and had a dance with him at a White House reception after he sang to her. Princes William and Harry’s affection for Neil Diamond’s music was apparent to other revellers who saw them recently at fashionable Barts bar in London’s Chelsea. Apparently they insisted that “Sweet Caroline” was played on the jukebox no fewer than eight times, singing along to it with a group of friends.
When informed that “Sweet Caroline” will almost certainly be on William and Kate’s request list after the wedding, Neil Diamond
commented: “Perhaps I should re-write the lyrics, to Sweet Catherine, just for the occasion. And if they come to one of my shows this summer, I’ll sing that very personal version for them from the stage. I’m flattered Prince William likes the song, especially since his mother told me ‘Forever In Blue Jeans’ was her favourite the last time she came to one of my shows, in 1989 I believe”.
