Indeed it was fifty years ago today that Sergeant Lennon’s Beatles first performed at The Cavern Club, but from that point onwards they were anything but a Lonely Hearts Club Band. Within weeks, Liverpool took them to their hearts, and within 18 months the UK followed, with the USA and the rest of the world not long after that!!
The Beatles made a total of 292 appearances at the Mathew Street venue, the last coming on 3 August 1963. By
this stage they were entering a stratosphere of hysteria and fanaticism, which coined the media phrase “Beatlemania”. The rest is world history, as never before or since have an ensemble of musicians captured such a massive global audience!! Sadly The Cavern Club’s fortunes, along with original drummer Pete Best, went in the opposite direction. Pete Best was famously jettisoned in favour of Ringo Starr in 1962, and The Cavern Club after a brief respite, closed for the last time in the early 1970s. In a mindless act of vandalism in 1973, Liverpool City Council sanctioned it’s demolition!! It beggars belief that the Council’s pen pushing bureaucrats could not see the value of the venue as a heritage site, and a shrine to which Beatles worshippers would flock for time in memorial!! How shortsighted must these “Philistines” have been, not to see the potential of The Cavern Club as a major global tourist attraction?!! The felony was compounded further by the fact that the site was not developed, and was used as a car park for the next decade!!
Coming to their senses belatedly, they then re-built The Cavern in the 1980s, and in fairness having visited the venue in 2005, they have recreated and reproduced the original perfectly. The venue is incredibly atmospheric, with the low red brick arched ceiling giving it a slightly dingy, claustrophobic, but electrifying feel. Although the visitor to The Cavern is very much aware that it is a facsimile, you can still sense the spirit of The Beatles in the space between those dank red brick walls!! The fact of the matter is that The Beatles and their music have transcended every aspect of the lives of every generation since they made their first appearance at The Cavern fifty years ago. They have soundtracked the lives of billions of people in the five decades since the 9th February 1961.
