Gary Moore’s legacy as one of the “Guitar Greats” is absolutely guaranteed – it’s a fairly pointless exercise compiling a Top Ten, but he is easily up there with the finest Blues guitarists worldwide. However, the untimely death of the former Thin Lizzy guitarist, Gary Moore, on Sunday at the age of 58, leaves a strong sense of unfinished business and unfulfilled potential as far as Thin Lizzy goes. And of course this is very much connected with the premature death of Thin Lizzy’s front man and lead vocalist, Phil Lynott in the 1980s.

Historically, we are always left with the “what if” void when a charismatic icon dies prematurely, and it makes little odds which sphere and walk of life they operate in. It matters little whether it is President John F Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe or Jimi Hendrix……..there is a sense of a lack of closure. They may never have lived up to the great expectations that were thrust upon them, but we have this aching feeling that there was so much more to come. And this is very much the case with Phil Lynott and Gary Moore as a double act. Phil Lynott’s early death robbed Thin Lizzy of their best years, and by association denied Gary Moore the opportunity of continuing a wonderful partnership with this prodigious talent!! Luckily Gary Moore produced some wonderful music as a solo artist, and if you only have time for a quick snack, his  signature tune “Parisienne Walkways” , encapsulates his brilliance. For a full banquet, there are a multitude of fantastic albums!! But for all of his solo work,  it might be argued his best work was in tandem with Phil Lynott.

Sadly we will never know “what might have been” had Phil Lynott and Gary Moore continued their partnership. But we CAN celebrate what they achieved in their short time together!!
