Reports have consistently appeared in recent months claiming that Oasis would get back together to mark the 20th anniversary of their debut album, “Definitely Maybe”. However the chances of an Oasis Reunion in 2014 are “Definitely, Maybe, Highly Unlikely”………
Is it really 20 years ago that the Record Press author was playing pool in the Arboretum pub in Nottingham, when suddenly I was
transfixed to the pub video screen? What was so profound as to make me stop in my tracks and look and listen to a video across a crowded room where both sight and sound were seriously impaired in by the smoky, noisy environment of the pub? The answer is that I had just discovered Oasis for the first time, as they bellowed out “Live Forever”. In an instant I was smitten by the electricity and energy of the song!!
Within weeks the cassette of Oasis’ first album “Definitely Maybe” was a permanent fixture on my Sony Walkman. Wherever I went, Oasis came with me. I was blown away by the anthemic songs, the melodies, the raw energy and the bolshy, “Devil may care” attitude of the lead vocalist – a guy by the name of Liam Gallagher.
My obsession was cemented by the release of Oasis’ second album “What’s the Story Morning Glory” in 1995 and one of my fondest memories of that time was sitting one Summer Sunday afternoon in the garden of Carol McGiffen’s former home that she had shared with Chris Evans (
blatant namedropping!! ) As we sat on the patio swathed in August sunshine, we were listening to the Radio1 Chart Rundown to see who had won the “Battle of the Britpop Bands”. In the event, Blur pipped Oasis to the No1 spot with Country House” – Oasis simply had to “Roll With It” and accept the runners up spot, which I am sure they did less than graciously!!
Oasis were at the centre of Britpop in 1995/ 1996, ably supported by The Verve, Pulp, Supergrass, Suede, Sleeper and Elastica. This was a golden era for music, where the sun shone brightly for a couple of summers that incorporated England hosting the European football championships, Euro ‘96. The bubble inevitably burst with England’s defeat on penalties in the Semi Finals of Euro ’96 and the disappointing third Oasis album “Be Here Now” the following year.
Since the mid 1990’s there have been bursts of brilliance from Oasis, but nothing sustained. Lest we forget how great a band Oasis were in their pomp, here is the Record Press Top 10 Best Oasis Songs –
