This week has seen Madonna tantalise and tease her fans, by revealing the artwork for her new album “MDNA.” The album is to be released on the 25th March, but ahead of that the first single from MDNA, “Give Me All Your Luvin” will make it’s world debut on American Idol this week. The release date for the single is this Friday, 3rd February.

In a perfectly choreographed publicity stunt, Madonna is to perform the single “Give Me All Your Luvin” live at the Superbowl, which is totally in keeping with the meticulous planning that goes into everything that Madonna does. Her publicity is as perfectly choreographed as her on stage dance routines!! Nothing is left to chance – it can’t be because Madonna is a control freak, never more so than when it comes to protecting the Madonna brand.

I recently saw her on The Graham Norton Show on BBC1 and it struck me that her poise, elegance and steely resolve and aloofness were not only reminiscent of Wallace Simpson, at the centre of Madonna’s new film “W.E” that she was promoting……. Those very same attributes were reminiscent of the Hollywood stars that used to grace Norton’s predecessor, Michael Parkinson’s Saturday night chat show in the 1970s.  Seeing Madonna interviewed by Graham Norton, I was immediately reminded of the Hollywood actresses of the 1940s and 1950s, in particular Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall. These were tough, no nonsense women – they were not Hollywood stars because they were sexy and glamorous; they were stars because they had an arrogance, an aloofness, a sense of great self belief and self worth that separated them from the mere mortals that worshipped them at the shrine of the cinema.

Madonna possesses exactly the same attributes, presence and charisma as the Hollywood Greats of the 1940s and 1950s. And although her public image is just as well managed as Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall’s reputations were, like those actresses it goes much deeper than merely superficial image. Madonna was born to be a star – fundamentally it is in her DNA!! For that reason I interpret the title of Madonna’s new album title “MDNA” as being an affirmation that Madonna was born to be Queen of Pop.

As we approach the 30th Anniversary of Madonna’s career, let’s celebrate her regal status as Queen of Pop –
