Whilst the UK singles charts in 1975 were proving to be an eclectic mix showcasing Glam Rock, Disco, Northern Soul, mainstream Soul and Bay City Roller Mania, the album charts were dominated by some definitive album releases; notably rock hybrids fashioned by the “Prog Rock” Pink Floyd, “Blues Rock” Led Zeppelin & “Glam Rock” Queen……
Here’s the Record Press Top 5 Best Albums released in 1975 –
Top 5 Best albums released in 1975
1) Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here
Having had great commercial and critical success and acclaim with their previous album Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd were almost suffering from “survivor guilt” with the follow up album Wish You Were Here. The album was a melancholic, reflective tribute to former band member and founder Syd Barrett, epitomised by the track “Shine on you Crazy Diamond” ( “Remember when you were young, you shone like the Sun?” ). Although denied by songwriter Roger Waters, the title track “Wish you were here” also seems to be a fitting tribute to the charismatic former front man Syd Barrett. The other two tracks on the album “Have a Cigar” and “Welcome to the Machine” are a satirical slant on the record / music industry. A great album that transcends the the last four decades.
For most critics, this is Queen’s best album, with its audacious centrepiece mock rock opera “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Queen broke the mould with “Bohemian Rhapsody”, but this musical jewel in the crown was ably supported by “Death on Two Legs”, “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon”, “You’re My Best friend”, “I’m in Love with my Car”, “39” and “Love of my Life”.
3) Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti
Although overshadowed by the sublime Led Zeppelin II album, Physical Graffiti gave us two of Led Zep’s best songs, “Houses of the Holy” and “Kashmir”. This album is a rock heavyeight – pure and simple!!
After ABBA’s international success in May 1974 with their Eurovision Song Contest winner “Waterloo”, things went very quiet for over a year. However this album produced three singles with increasing UK chart success – “I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do”, ( which only charted on the periphery of the Top 40 at No38 ) “SOS” ( which took the group into the Top 5 once again ) and “Mamma Mia” ( which gave ABBA their second UK No1 ).
5) David Bowie – Young Americans
This album marked David Bowie’s re-location to Los Angeles, which saw him make the departure from glam rock / rock inspired and orientated music to soul and funk. The title track “Young Americans” and “Fame” became successful singles and launched David Bowie to a new black, soul audience, whilst exbiting his great musical dexterity and versatility.
