So the UK government has implemented the £3 billion privatisation of the British postal service, the Royal Mail.

Amazingly the Royal Mail is 497 years old, established in 1516, when Henry VIII established a “Master of the Posts”, a post which in 1710 was renamed as “Postmaster General”. The Royal Mail service was first made available to the public by Charles I in July 1635, with postage being paid by the recipient. Charles I was the only English king to have been executed through beheading, which has a certain ironic twist as UK stamps carry the head and shoulders of the monarch.

Stamps were introduced in January 1840 with the Uniform Penny Post whereby a single rate for delivery anywhere in Great Britain and Ireland was pre-paid by the sender. A few months later, to certify that postage had been paid on a letter, the sender could affix the first adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black.
