After 43 years of persistent speculation and conjecture, Carly Simon has finally confessed that her 1972 UK No3 hit You’re So Vain is about Warren Beatty after all.
Carly Simon told People magazine that she’s “confirmed that the second verse is Warren,” one of her ex-lovers in the
1970s. She added that Warren Beatty “thinks the whole thing is about him”.
In 2004 Carly Simon teased that one of the subjects of the song had a name containing the letters “a”, “e” and “r”, which not only ring fenced Warren beatty but also Carly Simon’s ex-husband James Taylor and past collaborator Mick Jagger.
So finally it is official – the second verse of You’re So Vain is about Warren Beatty: “You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive / Well you said that we made such a pretty pair/ And that you would never leave / But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me / I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee”.
All we have to do is establish who are the subjects of the other verses and the “Carly conundrum” will be solved!! Which individuals do you think the rest of the song is about? Let us know in the Reply Box below.
