This year stages a massive 50th Anniversary……….It’s 50 years since Doctor Who’s Tardis first landed on our TV screens!! The first Doctor Who to emerge from the Tardis in November 1963 was played by William Hartnell, as a white haired eccentric mad professor type and that trend has prevailed ever since.

Anyone between the age of 5 and 65 will have grown up with Doctor Who, in one of his many incarnations. The Recordpress author’s particular Doctor Who was played by the cool, suave, debonair and urbane Jon Pertwee ( 1970-1974 ). Strictly speaking my Doctor Who viewing years spanned three Doctors, with the more eccentric Doctors played by Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker on either side of Jon Pertwee. But the latter was the Doctor Who I identified with.

I can still remember how saddened and traumatised I was when in early 1974 Jon Pertwee was regenerated into Tom Baker at the end of the series. It really was like losing a friend and father figure. I had grown up with Jon Pertwee’s Doctor Who and he had been with me from the age of seven through to eleven – those Junior school years when a delicate, impressionable schoolboy needs to be guided by a Time Lord!!

Whichever  Doctor Who you identify with, he has always been unflappable and instilled you with a feeling of well-being at the end of a harrowing episode. At some time or another, many of us have watched the programme, peeking from behind the sofa, cowering from the Daleks, Cybermen or some equally scary adversary of Doctor Who. But throughout we were confident that the Doctor would save us and mankind from the grips of the evil monster!! Here’s to many more “light years” of Doctor Who vanquishing evil across the Universe!!
