Very sad to hear of the death of Vidal Sassoon, one the seminal architects of 1960s fashion and style. I recently saw a documentary on Vidal Sassoon on BBC1, and remarked what a thoroughly decent, genuine, down to earth chap he was. This is very much juxtaposed by the fashion world that he occupied, crafted and revolutionised, that today is populated by so many fake, shallow, pretentious wannabees. Vidal Sassoon was the real deal and along with fashion designer, Mary Quant, revolutionised the way women looked and dressed in the 1960s!!
In truth, Vidal Sassoon was integral to the Holy Trinity of fashion, film & music in the 1960s!! The creator of the “bob” hairstyle, he was best known for his short, geometric cuts, the style which succeeded the bouffant styles fashionable in the 1950s.Vidal Sassoon opened his first salon in London in 1954 and gave what he called “geometry” and “architectural shapes” to hair. His styles emancipated women’s fashion from the high and heavy “beehive” into cuts that were easy to manage.
The wash-and-wear styles like the bob cut fitted in with the emerging feminist movement. Vidal Sassoon once remarked: “Women were going to work and assuming their own power……They didn’t have time to sit under the
dryer”. Mary Quant, the British fashion designer who popularised the mini-skirt, was one of his most high profile customers and christened Vidal Sassoon the “Chanel of hair”.
Vidal Sassoon’s celebrity client list quickly expanded and included most of the young models and film stars of the day, including Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton and Mia Farrow, notably for her look in Rosemary’s Baby, the iconic 1968 supernatural film. As a tribute to Vidal Sassoon’s influence throughout the culture of the 1960s, here is a Top Ten 1960s British Female Icons from Fashion, Film & Music –
