Scott McKenzie, who sang “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)”, the song that came to represent the hippie movement and the “Summer of Love” in 1967, passed way at the weekend. A statement on Scott McKenzie’s website says the 73-year-old died on Saturday in Los Angeles. Scott McKenzie apparently had been fighting Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a disease that affects the nervous system, and had been in and out of the hospital since 2010.

Scott McKenzie’s “San Francisco” was infact written by John Phillips, of 1960s hippie group The Mamas and the Papas. However “San Francisco” will always be synonymous with Scott McKenzie, song and singer coming to epitomise the brief innocence of the hippie movement that burgeoned out of San Francisco and spread quickly through the USA and Europe. There were three No1s in the UK that spanned the “Summer of Love” from June to September 1967 and each one has come to be closely associated with the acid / LSD induced psychedelia and  free love of the Hippy movement and culture – Procol Harum’s psychedelic “Whiter Shade of Pale”, Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” and of course Scott McKenzie’s “San Francisco”.

That one hit record during the 1967 “Summer of Love” enabled Scott McKenzie to become a member of that exclusive “One Hit Wonders” Club ie artists who’s only Top 20 hit was a No1. So to celebrate Scott McKenzie’s life, here is the Ultimate Top 10 One Hit Wonders from the 1960s & 1970s –
