Robbie Williams has been granted the Freedom of the City of Stoke-on-Trent, with the city’s Councillors unanimously voting to bestow the singer with the honour of Freedom of the City.

The official motion to give Robbie Williams Freedom of the City reads: “The council recognises and acknowledges the contribution made by Robert Peter Williams for his role as ambassador for the city. By granting this award [the council] shows its overwhelming appreciation for his outstanding contribution to music and for his local and international fundraising activities, specifically supporting children in the area”.

Council leader Mohammed Pervez commented: “Robbie Williams is a true international superstar. He is one of our city’s most famous sons. He has raised the city’s profile and he’s proud of being a ‘Stokie”. Mohammed Pervez did not specify whether Robbie Williams would be able to graze his livestock within the city boundaries, but if you see a flock of sheep grazing on a traffic roundabout in Stoke, look out for Robbie Williams dressed as a biblical shepherd!!

Stoke hosted a number of events to mark the 40th birthday of Robbie Williams who grew up in the city and last month a blue plaque was mounted on the gates in Tunstall Park, near Robbie’s childhood home.
