Sad that Neil Armstrong has died, but his trip to the “Celestial Heavens” will not be an unfamiliar one for him……….He’s been there before, some forty odd years ago!! I am just old enough to remember the impact that astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had on
Earth, as a result of leaving the planet and being the first men to step foot on the Moon!! I can still remember Dad waking me up in the middle of the night and watching the moon landing on the black and white portable TV in my parents’ bedroom.
I recall the moon landing seemed to take forever, but those historic two hours in the middle of the night as a six year old, were a very surreal experience. The abstractness of the whole experience was heightened further by the live transmission and picture on the TV being very grainy and shakey……..I think I then went into some strange trance like, hallucogenic state of mind, because 43 years on I can still remember the picture on the black and white TV acquiring a pink hue. Although 1969 was very much part of the hippie,
flower power, LSD fuelled era, I think the explanation for the black and white TV picture turning into colour, was probably due to my being overtired and fatigued rather than a hallucogenic druggy trip!!
Even in 2012 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s achievement of landing on the Moon, still defies belief. The subsequent Apollo missions to the Moon and NASA’s exploratory trips to Venus, Mars and the rest of the Solar System, detracts nothing from the impact of that day and night in July 1969!! It’s still the greatest achievement of homo sapien and the human race!!
