No sooner are Halloween and Bonfire Night / Guy Fawkes Night out of the way and we are immediately bombarded with the Christmas TV commercials that will indoctrinate the viewer between now and Christmas Day!! Of course the protracted Christmas build up starts even earlier in the retail outlets and high street shops, where festive merchandise has been on sale since early September.

Christmas really has become a retail extravaganza and almost unrecognisable from the days of my 1970s childhood, rummaging through a couple of tangerines, a lump of coal and a confectionery selection box in my less than bulging christmas stocking!! I seem to recall that there was some sort of religious connotation to Christmas in those days!! “Contemporary Christmas” is a very different affair, but it is still the time to be jolly and merry, if not downright enebriated and enjoy the Silly Season!!
