Virgin Money, the bank backed by Richard Branson, has launched a series of credit cards featuring his old protegees the Sex Pistols. There are two showcasing the artwork for the band’s 1977 iconic album and album cover “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols” and a third card features record sleeve imagery alluding to the single “Anarchy in the UK”.

There is a certain symmetry here in that Richard Branson’s Virgin Records gave the Sex Pistols a home in 1977 when the anti-social, rowdy, rebellious tenants  were evicted in quick succession by their landlords at EMI and A&M Records. The Record Press author is sure that there is certainly an element of sentiment here as Virgin Records has always been close to Richard Branson’s heart and he is on record as saying he regrets selling the record label to help bankroll his airline business.

A Virgin Money spokesman has said: “It is time for consumers to put a little bit of rebellion in their pocket. In launching these cards, we wanted to celebrate Virgin’s heritage and difference. The Sex Pistols challenged convention and the established ways of thinking – just as we are doing today in our quest to shake up UK banking.”  Richard Branson commented: “Even after nearly 40 years, the Sex Pistols’ power to provoke is undimmed.”

Frankly I would align the rebellious, anarchical Sex Pistols, particularly Johnny ( Lydon ) Rotten and Sid Vicious, with bank robbers rather than bank customers. Come to think of it, the name Johnny Rotten immediately conjures up the image of corrupt bankers and city traders, “rotten” through to the core!!
