Siouxsie Sioux will come out of retirement to join Marianne Faithfull and Iggy and the Stooges as headline acts at this year’s Meltdown Festival, at London’s Southbank Centre from 14th – 23rd June.
The Meltdown Festival headliners are the choice of Yoko Ono, who is curating the event which marks the 20th anniversary of the
festival in her 80th year. In her role as curator, Yoko Ono will follow in the footsteps of previous hosts David Bowie, Scott Walker, Jarvis Cocker, Ray Davies and Morrissey.
Yoko Ono stated: “It’s not only a great honour to curate Meltdown in its 20th year, it’s also a lot of fun to be able to invite many of my favourite performers, activists and favourite collaborators to join me”. Congratulations to Yoko Ono for selecting Siouxsie Sioux, who happens to be one of the Recordpress author’s favourite female artists. Siouxsie Sioux was in the vanguard of the punk / new wave movement in 1977 and led the way for female artists like Debbie Harry, Hazel O’Connor and Lene Lovich.
Siouxsie Sioux as it’s female pioneer, brought much needed style to a grubby, sweaty, male dominated punk / new wave movement. She projected an aura of ballsy raw power and had a don’t mess attitude attitude to match any of her male punk counterparts!! Siouxsie
Sioux along with her backing band,The Banshees, projected a colourful, iconic and distinctive image that I am sure was an influence on the New Romantic genre that followed, in particular Adam Ant.
Costume and attitude apart, Siouxsie Sioux & The Banshees wrote and performed good, well crafted songs and that’s what they will be remembered for. It’s unlikely that you will have forgotten their biggest hit, a No3 with a Beatles cover “Dear Prudence”, but quite possible that some of their other Top 30 hits have slipped out of memory and consciousness. So as a reminder of Siouxsie Sioux & The Banshees’ brilliance, here is the Recordpress Top 5 Best Siouxsie Sioux & The Banshees Songs –
