Film Director Ken Russell has died, but leaves a legacy of idiosyncratically weird, wonderful and surreal films. His legacy in music circles and amongst music fans, especially those of rock band The Who, is absolutely assured through his directing of the film of their rock opera “Tommy”.

“Tommy”, the 1975 film based upon The Who’s 1969 rock opera album musical “Tommy”, was directed by Ken Russell and featured a colourful, illustrious cast, including The Who band members, most notably lead vocalist Roger Daltrey playing the title role. The other cast members included Ken Russell favourite Oliver Reed along with Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Elton John, and Jack Nicholson.

“Tommy” was as bonkers a film as you will ever see – in art terms it was an abstract, in the mould of Picasso. Seared in the memory was the avalanche of baked beans, which had it been made today would have been the source of multi millions of pounds of revenue through product placement by Heinz!! Back in 1975, the revenue generated was through sales of cinema tickets and copies of the “Tommy” double vinyl album.
