Former Smiths lead guitarist Johnny Marr will be bestowed with the Godlike Genius Award at this year’s NME Awards, which will be held on 27th February at The Troxy in London.

After working in recent times with Modest Mouse and The Cribs, Johnny Marr will releases his debut solo single “The Messenger” two days before the NME annual ceremony. Johnny Marr said he is “honoured to be the next recipient of a gong that The Clash, Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher have won in recent years”.

Johnny Marr left The Smiths in 1987 and later worked with the likes of The Pretenders and The The. He fronted his own band Johnny Marr & the Healers and has worked on recordings by former Red Hot Chili Peppers member John Frusciante, Talking Heads and Beck.
