2013 is the 40th Anniversary of the release of Pink Floyd’s seminal concept album “Dark Side of the Moon”, which explored the dark side of human nature, including greed and avarice in the iconic song “Money”. This is a recurring theme in songs, more recently tackled by Jesse J’s anti materialism song “Price Tag”.

The sentiments and theme of Pink Floyd’s song “Money” and Jesse J’s “Price Tag” have never been more relevant as many people have re-assessed their values and priorities during the worst global recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s. During the last 5 years many of us have examined our souls at the same time as examining our bank balances, not to mention examining behind the cushions on the sofa.

The regrettable conclusion is that too many of us have been too focused on money and materialistic pursuits for the past 40 years since the advent of easy credit in the 1970s and 1980s. The simple truth is that the so called “civilised” first world countries as a whole has become too greedy and selfish, but also deluded by living in the “never never” credit card culture!!
