The 22nd November 2013 marks the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of President John F Kennedy in the Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas on that fateful Friday in 1963.
We have all seen the footage of the assassination of the 35th President of the USA numerous times, but somehow the event does not become any less incredible with the passage of time. In a 24/7 rolling news society where TV has virtually sanitised the effect of violence on the viewer, the JFK assassination still beggars belief.
In the last 50 years, arguably the two most harrowing, traumatic and iconic moments have both happened in the US with the collapse of the Trade Center Twin Towers on 9/11 and the assassination of President John F Kennedy on 22/11. The Record Press author cannot think of two other events in my lifetime, other than possibly John Lennon’s killing and the death of Princess Diana, that have had such a massive impact on the world.
Ironically three of these events look place in the US, the bastion of democracy and freedom and perhaps this is why the JFK assassination is still so vivid and fresh and inbuilt into our conciousness. How is it that the President of the most powerful country in the world could have been slaughtered
with such consummate ease? Then of course, once you add into the mix all of the conspiracy theories, you have got one of the most enduring stories of all time.
The final ingredient to this fascinating story is that President John F Kennedy was incredibly charismatic, with film matinee star good looks and wonderful powers of oratory to back it up. Add into the mix the demure, fragrant femininity and beauty of the First Lady Jackie Kennedy and the folk lore of the Kennedy clan as a whole and you have a brilliant story of money, power and ultimately multiple tragedy. In essence the Kennedy story epitomises the American Dream, with a salutary message of the dangers and darkness that co-habit great wealth and absolute power.
