Blondie are to collect lifetime award at the NME Awards in London at the end of February 2014, in the year of their 40th Anniversary.

Blondie will receive the NME ‘Godlike Genius’ award at a ceremony on 26th February, following in the footsteps of Joy Division, Paul Weller and Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr.

Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry modestly commented: “It’s out of proportion, but it’s nice to be recognised. I find it particularly interesting that there aren’t many Americans who’ve been given this award before, so that’s flattering”.

NME’s editor Mike Williams said the band had been chosen for the prestigious NME ‘Godlike Genius’ in their 40th anniversary year, explaining: “They rewrote the rule book in the late ’70s by dragging punk rock to the top of the charts. Debbie Harry is the most iconic front-woman rock ‘n’ roll has ever produced”. The Record Press author would more or less concur with this viewpoint, although I would like to throw Debbie Harry’s contemporary Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders into the mix as a contender for the title of “most iconic front-woman rock ‘n’ roll”!!

Although Blondie swept into the UK charts in 1978 on the back of Punk and New Wave, under the auspices of producer Mike Chapman , they quickly demonstrated their adaptability and versatility, embracing disco with their No1 “Heart of Glass” and the rap / hip hop with “Rapture”.
