Singer Noel Harrison has died at his home in Devon, aged 79………In isolation, this statement probably leaves you non plussed, thinking “who is he?”

For the uninitiated, allow me to enlighten you……Noel Harrison was the son of the actor Rex Harrison and best known for recording the Oscar winning song “The Windmills Of Your Mind”, from the soundtrack of the film The Thomas Crown Affair, starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.

Sometimes one event transcends a life and a career and so it was with Noel Harrison. One song was truly bigger than the sum of the parts of the rest of his career. “The Windmills Of Your Mind” is quite simply a fantastic atmospheric song and a musical masterpiece. Noel Harrison said of the recording of “The Windmills Of Your Mind”: “It didn’t seem like a big deal at the time. I went to the studio one afternoon and sang it and pretty much forgot about it. I didn’t realise until later what a timeless, beautiful piece Michel LeGrand and the Bergmans had written. It turned out to be my most notable piece of work”.

And Noel Harrison was right. He will always be remembered for “The Windmills Of Your Mind” because it is a truly great song and in the humble opinion of the Record Press author, the greatest movie song of the 1960s.
