Don’t believe a word ( if you don’t wish to ) but the Thin Lizzy Boys are back in town to record their first album in 29 years!! The band will go into the studio next month, recording their first album without former lead vocalist Phil Lynott, who died in 1986. Thin Lizzy’s last album was “Thunder and Lightning” in 1983, which reached No 4 in the UK charts.
Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham informed Rolling Stone magazine: “We are all excited about the new record but especially Ricky [Warwick] and Damon [Johnson]”. He added: “You have got six guys chomping at the bit to get this thing going”.
Thin Lizzy’s current line up bears little resemblance to the ensemble that last gathered in the recording studios in 1983. Only two present members were in the group at that time – Scott Gorham and drummer Brian Downey. Ricky Warwick, the current lead vocalist joined Thin Lizzy in 2009, but as hard an act as Phil Lynott is to follow, life goes on as the surviving members of Queen proved after the death of Freddie Mercury!!
Scott Gorham has indicated that Thin Lizzy are intending to record with producer Kevin Shirley,
who has previously worked with Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and Journey. The band may also debut new material when they play at Dublin’s Olympia theatre in December.
Provided fans and critics don’t judge too harshly, and compare too closely with the Phil Lynott era, then I welcome this news from Thin Lizzy. It was only last year whilst watching a BBC4 documentary, that I fully realised and appreciated the contribution that Thin Lizzy have made to British music since their first hit “Whiskey in the Jar” in 1973. So as a reminder of the band’s brilliance, here’s a Top 5 Best Thin Lizzy Songs –
