The Record Press author had a flashback to his youth the other day when he picked up on a story on the US Billboard site about 1980s band Flock of Seagulls.

The story concerned a robbery of $70,000 equipment during a Flock of Seagulls concert in South California. Frontman Mike Score informed the Los Angeles Daily News that someone stole the band’s rented van from outside a Comfort Inn. The stolen gear included stage clothing, guitars, drums, a keyboard and hard drives containing the songs for Mike Score’s first solo album.

Flock of Seagulls always had a strong following in the US, but were perhaps less well appreciated in their home country of the UK. Hailing from Liverpool, Flock of Seagulls are best known for their 1982 hit “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)”, although my favourite songs were “I Ran (So Far Away)”, “Space Age love Song” and “Telecommunication”, all three singles coming off their self-titled album. It was always a source of some sadness and disappointment that the UK didn’t embrace Flock of Seagulls in the same way that I did. One of the best gigs I have ever seen was Flock of Seagulls at Rock City in Nottingham.

If you are still struggling to remember a Flock of Seagulls, the lead singer Mike Score looked like he had his hair on back to front, covering most of his face and the lead guitarist did a passable impression of Joe 90 or Timmy Mallett. Any the wiser?
