Far more illustrious writers than myself will write extensively and eloquently on David Bowie on the occasion of his passing.

The Record Press author is not going to espouse and eulogise with clichés like “legend” and “genius”, which are always wheeled out on the occasion of the death of a show business celebrity. Suffice it to say David Bowie wove the tapestry of my teenage years whilst creating the definitive soundtrack of the seventies for the whole of my generation. Somehow he transcended every genre he touched: music, film and fashion without ever becoming tired, clichéd or a parody of himself.

What struck me most was the dichotomy of David Bowie. He was everyman whilst not being like any other homo sapien. On one level he was this great innovator, creator, inventor who’s stage persona and alter egos were not of this world yet away from the stage he seemed totally grounded and down to earth. He came across as the most normal, level headed man in a world of insanity.
