Bob Godfrey, the animator behind much loved cartoons “Roobarb & Custard” and “Henry’s Cat” has died aged 91. In a strange coincidence, he has passed away in the same week as actor Richard Briers, who’s velvety dulcet tones narrated “Roobarb & Custard”.

For those of the author’s generation, growing up in the 1970s, “Roobarb & Custard” was one of our staple diets at teatime, as we religiously watched the anarchic cartoon about a feuding cat and dog, with it’s catchy theme tune and “wobbly dog” animation. In a less sophisticated era “Roobarb and Custard” provided an innocent escape from the horrors of the school day and prefaced tedious homework with some levity. “Roobarb & Custard” wasn’t alone as it was part of a pantheon of great TV cartoons in the 1970s.
