There is music memorabilia and then there is mega music memorabilia and it doesn’t come any bigger than Pink Floyd and Queen’s huge inflatables stage props that accompanied their rock concerts in the 1980s and 1990s.

During those decades part of the Queen stage set included massive blow ups of  lead singer Freddie Mercury and lead guitarist Brian May. Meanwhile the Pink Floyd stage set was famed not only for its spectacular lighting, but also a 30ft pig and a disturbing teacher with a 36ft head, used by Roger Waters during his 1990 performance of The Wall at the Berlin Wall.

The Record Press author mentions these items as they are to be the showpieces at an auction of inflatables created by prop-builders Air Artists. Creator Rob Harries informed the BBC that a change in creative direction means: “I’m sad to see them go but they very rarely see the light of day and so I would be quite happy for someone else to take them for a walk. The clear out has been quite cathartic, and brought back a lot of memories, but I do feel I’ve been there and done that now, and it’s time to move on.”

Algie, the original inflatable pig that was flown from Battersea power station depicted on the cover of the Pink Floyd album Animals has been withdrawn from sale due to its poor condition. Algie the pig became part of rock folklore in 1976 when it broke loose from its moorings above Battersea power station during the photoshoot for the album cover of the Pink Floyd LP Animals. As it floated over London, it caused air travel disruption and flight cancellations at Heathrow airport, before finally crashing to earth on a farm in Kent.

The auction will be held by Durrant’s via the-saleroom.com. Bidding opens on the 5th September and closes on the 15th September.
