I can’t believe Paul McCartney is 70 in June!! Macca a Septagenarian? How could the baby faced Beatle have become a pensioner? Yes he’s a Gemini and yes there will be 70 candles on his birthday cake in June!!
In truth, in keeping with being a Gemini, Paul McCartney’s solo career has been very hit and miss, as he has been at the mercy of the conflicting Gemini Twins!! Since the Beatles split in 1970, Paul McCartney’s body of work has oscillated between the brilliant and the banal and between beatification and bland!!
Nobody in their right, or even wrong mind, could argue that Paul McCartney’s songwriting with the Beatles was
not par excellence and the epitome of creativity. However in his solo career, he has conquered great peaks but also trawled incredible troughs. Paul McCartney’s unfinest hour came when somehow he achieved the incredible feat of demolishing the great peaks on his beloved Mull of Kintyre, depositing them in the deepest trough!! Although “Mull of Kintyre” was his biggest multi million selling global hit record, I would wager that for every one of the two million people in the UK who bought a vinyl copy, there are twice as many that loathe the song!! To emphasise the best and worst of Paul McCartney, here are two Top Tens of his Best and Worst Songs!!

Paul McCartney has always divided opinion as a solo artist, but for all of that he is idolised and loved in the UK and throughout the world. None of us have lived our lives with either total success or absolute failure, and Paul McCartney for all his God like status is no different. As a mere mortal, he has had his fair share of flops, but undoubtedly his work with the Beatles makes him, along with John Lennon, the most accomplished songwriter in the second half of the 20th Century. For this reason, millions will raise a metaphorical glass of champagne in June to wish Macca the very best wishes for his 70th Birthday. And I will certainly be one of them!!
