Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark ( OMD ) have announced that they will be going on tour in April and May 2013 in support of their new album “English Electric”. This is OMD’s first album of new material in 24 years since the release of the “Pacific Age” album in 1986.

OMD’s release of “English Electric” neatly brings everything full circle as our introduction to OMD was through their first single “Electricity”. OMD were one of a handful of UK bands in the late 1970s ( including the Human League and Gary Numan’s Tubeway Army ) to break new ground with keyboard / synthesizer led music, following in the footsteps of German pioneers Kraftwerk and the David Bowie / Brian Eno collaboration on the album “Heroes”.

Funnily enough I heard the Thompson Twins on the radio the other day and it struck me how the later keyboard / synth bands have not stood the test of time in the way that OMD and the Human League have. The one notable exception to the rule is the Petshop Boys.

OMD were a slick outfit, who produced sophisticated and well crafted songs – I can remember going to a gig in the early 1980s at The Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham and being fascinated by the fact that the two men on stage could produce a symphony of sound, worthy of a venue designed to amplify classical music acoustics. OMD were the real deal and whilst we await their new material on “English Electric”, here’s a reminder of their past glories with a Top10 Best OMD Songs –
