Following on from the pop group Blue in 2011 and Englebert Humperdinck last year, it is now the turn of Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler to be the UK representative at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest.

Bonnie Tyler, who’s first hit was “Lost in France” in 1976, will perform the song “Believe in Me” in front of an estimated 120 million viewers in Malmo, Sweden on the18th May. Having found herself lost in France in the days before Satnav, let’s just hope she’s not lost or last in Sweden!! European politics aside, the UK has a chance of avoiding humiliation this year as Bonnie Tyler’s UK entry for the 58th Eurovision Song Contest was written by American songwriter Desmond Child with British songwriters Lauren Christy and Christopher Braide. Desmond Child has worked with Bonnie Tyler throughout her career, and has also written hits for rock bands Kiss and Bon Jovi, as well as the Ricky Martin hits “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and “She Bangs”.

Bonnie Tyler’s unique and distinctive gravelly voice was a regular visitor to the charts in the 1970s and 1980s, culminating in her 1983 No1 “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, which was written by Meatloaf’s songwriter Jim Steinman and became one of the early 1980s power ballads. He was also responsible for her No2 hit “Holding Out For A Hero” as Bonnie Tyler cemented her niche in the 1980s Power Ballads genre.
