Spandau Ballet’s 1983 hit single “Gold” became one of the unofficial anthems of London 2012 Olympics, adopted by Gabby Logan on the nightly BBC1 Olympics highlights programme “Olympics Tonight”…….the chorus of “Gold” striking up several times most nights to signal another Gold medal for Team GB. Radio also adopted the theme too, most notably Absolute Radio, with their Breakfast Show presenter Christian O’Connell running a Team GB Spandathon.

Absolute Radio’s Team GB Spandathon pledge involved playing Spandau Ballet’s “Gold” as many times as Team GB won gold medals at the end of the Olympics tournament. True ( to mention another Spandau Ballet hit!! ) to their word, on the morning of Monday 13th August Absolute Radio played it 29 times, with Spandau Ballet’s lead singer Tony Hadley singing it a couple of times live in the studio and Gary Kemp also joining Christian O’Connell for a chat.

At the end of the show Tony Hadley was presented with a framed copy of Spandau Ballet’s “Gold” vinyl single, Olympics branded and personalised with a gold plaque, inscribed with the words “Team GB Spandathon”.
