BBC Four’s recent documentary “Nile Rodgers: Hitmaker” not only reminded us of the brilliance of disco ensemble Chic, but what it also revealed was how influential Nile Rodgers was as a producer for other artists in the early to mid 1980s.

Nile Rodgers, in collaboration with bass guitarist Bernard Edwards, crafted some great disco standards as Chic between 1976 and 1979 including “Le Freak”, “I Want Your Love”, “Everybody Dance”, “Dance, Dance, Dance”, “My Forbidden Lover”, and “Good Times”. These were perfect R&B / Disco songs that have stood the test of time, better than many of their contemporaries, but as Chic’s sun set at the end of the decade of disco, Nile Rodgers remained in the recording studio in the 1980s producing albums and singles for other artists such as David Bowie, Madonna and Duran Duran.

Having produced David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” album in 1983, Nile Rodgers then went on to produce Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” album and Duran Duran’s No1 single “The Reflex” and follow up “Wild Boys”.
