Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has sold its millionth copy in the UK, 19 years after it was first released. It has subsequently re-entered the chart on a further eight occasions since 1994.

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” passed the “Millionth Milestone” after selling a further 68,000 copies in 2013. Co-written and produced by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” first appeared on the album “Merry Christmas” and has achieved £30.5million in royalties globally since it was released. It returned to the Official Singles Chart in 2007 and has reached the Top 40 every December since.

Mariah Carey’s Motown-esque “All I Want For Christmas Is You” peaked at No2 when first released as a vinyl single and CD in 1994, but was kept off the No1 by East 17’s “Stay Another Day”.

Mariah Carey is not alone, because over the years there have been several equally brilliant Xmas songs to be denied the No1 spot, peaking at No2. The most worthy of a Xmas No1 was Greg Lake’s “I Believe In Father Christmas” in 1975, which was held off the No1 spot by the runaway juggernaut “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. In the previous year the Wombles’ “Wombling Merry Christmas” was denied the Xmas No1 spot by Mud’s “Lonely This Christmas”, although the latter was a deserved No1. In 1987 the Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York” was cheated of the Xmas No1 spot by The Petshop Boys’ “Always On My Mind”. In fairness as brilliant as all three of these Xmas songs are, they were kept off the Xmas No1 spot by equally fantastic songs!!
