Had Marc Bolan not died so tragically in a car accident just before his 30th Birthday in September 1977, he would have been eligible for a bus pass this week!! Somehow I don’t think Marc Bolan would have given up his standard rock star Rolls Royce or Limouisine for public transport!! That said, he did die in a humble Mini……

It’s an incredible thought that Marc Bolan would still only have been 65 if he had not died that night in Autumn 1977…….like James Dean, he was destined to die young. However in those ten years between 1967 and 1977, like so many rock stars who die prematurely, Marc Bolan packed it in. With his band Tyranosaurus Rex, Marc Bolan was anything but a dinosaur. Far from it, he was in the vanguard of Rock and the “Godfather of Glam Rock”.

Marc Bolan and T.Rex invented “Glam Rock”……….although Gary Glitter, David Bowie, Elton John, Alvin Stardust, Slade, Sweet, Suzi Quatro and Mud had been around for years serving their musical apprenticeships in clubs and pubs, it was Marc Bolan and T.Rex’s music that gave them the licence, premise and platform to exist and be successful!!

Marc Bolan set the tone for the rest – he was an inventor and an innovator and his influence has only grown in the intervening 35 years since his death. These days you can barely turn the TV on without hearing one of his songs soundtracking a TV commercial – his music continues to have a relevance and cachet in the 21st Century, which ironically makes the “20th Century Boy” a man of this century too!!

Although Marc Bolan’s songs may have had slightly limited lyrics and a certain element of repetition, this in no way diminishes the musicianship of the T.Rex band and the quality of vocals of Marc Bolan. Marc Bolan simply set the standard for all that followed with “Glam Rock” in the 1970s and “New Romanticism” in the 1980s.
