So Lou Reed has left the building………In some ways, it’s amazing he didn’t vacate that derelict warehouses and run down tenements of New York years ago!!

Lou Reed told it like it is in his songs both as a solo artist and in collaboration with John Cale in the Velvet Underground. His tired, world weary face reflecting his dark, world weary song lyrics for five decades. Lou Reed did not sugar coat life in his songs, but told a story of the dark, seedy sordid world in New York, inhabited by drug users, drug dealers, prostitutes and pimps. Lou Reed did not wax lyrical and when he appeared to be doing so with the classic “Perfect Day”, it was just a mirage. Lou Reed’s New York was not the one that the travel agents promote in their glossy brochures, but the dark underbelly of urban life familiar to those who wander off the tourist trail after dark.

There was nowhere to hide with Lou Reed – he was brutally frank and honest about the unrelenting misery that he saw about him. That’s why we loved him because his music had integrity and realism and didn’t patronise.
