Seven hundred film costumes, assembled by the British Film Institute (BFI) over 20 years, are to be transferred to the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) for the V&A’s Hollywood Film Costume Exhibition, in which more than 130 classic film costumes will be on display from the 20th October 2012.
Amongst the iconic Hollywood film costumes will be the “Superman” outfit worn by Christopher Reeve and a dress Marilyn Monroe wore in “Some Like It Hot”, which will be worth the entrance fee alone as the latter film is one of the author’s favourites!! Other film costumes include those worn by Harrison Ford in his role as adventurer and archaeologist Indiana Jones and the black suits worn in “The Blues Brothers”.
The most spectacular and outlandish Hollywood film costumes on display will surely be the comic-book superhero outfits worn by Batman actor Christian Bale, Spider Man actor Tobey Maguire and Michelle Pfeiffer, in her role as Catwoman. The piece de resistance will possibly be the original ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in “The Wizard of Oz”, as she travelled down the famous “Yellow Brick Road”.
This set me pondering as to which iconic Hollywood film costume I would hire out for the day for a Hollywood film themed fancy dress party. I guess it would probably have to be something from the “Star Wars” franchise or possibly John Travolta’s three piece white suit from “Saturday Night Fever”.
These two films were seminal ones for me as they were showing in 1977, which was the my year of independence in terms of being the first year of going to the cinema with my mates, unaccompanied by an adult. The less said about the trips to the X rated film double bills on a Sunday at the Classic Cinema in Nottingham, the better!! On that note, it was with some sadness that I learned Sylvia Kristel, star of the Emmanuelle films, died the other day……..She was there too on some of those distant Sunday afternoons in 1977………And yes it’s not an urban myth, old men in raincoats did frequent the cinema!!
