Lighting and choreography apart, the music at the London 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony was something of a Curate’s Egg!! In truth the Olympics Closing Ceremony resembled a spaghetti western…….Good in parts, bad at times and downright ugly at other stages!!
The “Good” was represented by trio Jesse J, Tinie Tempah and Taio Cruz along with Elbow, Muse, Spice Girls and The Who who acquitted
themselves reasonably well. The “Bad” was soundtracking Blur’s “Parklife” – why were the band not in the Olympic Stadium rather than at Hyde Park?! Why were Madness not given a bigger role……..they have the charisma and track record!! In truth what was truly “bad” was that an occasion of this magnitude warranted heavyweight British performers such as Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Elton John and the occasion was fairly devoid of big name acts. But worst of all was Ed Sheeran covering Pink Floyd’s “Wish you were here”…….I certainly found myself wishing Pink Floyd were there to do their standard justice!!
In the end we got the “Ugly” in the form of George Michael blatantly peddling his new single, which was too mercenary for words and Liam Gallagher doing a “kareoke” version of “Wonderwall”, which should have been re-named “Wonder-WAIL”!! But the “Icongruous Award” had to go to Jessie J fronting Queen’s “We will rock you”, especially as it was juxtaposed with film footage of Freddie Mercury!! Had Paul Rodgers got a prior engagement?!!
However the evening and occasion was saved by moments of magic, epitomised by Ray Davies singing “Waterloo Sunset”, Russell Brand’s version of “I am a Walrus” on top of the Beatles’ bright yellow Magical Mystery Tour Bus and Eric Idle capturing the moment with “Always look on the bright side of life”. Other highlights were Kaiser Chiefs complete with a convoy of Union Jack-ed mod scooters, to accompany their rendition of the Who’s “Pinball Wizard” and the Who’s “authentic” version of their own classic song “My Generation”, which was a very fitting way to bring down the curtain on the London Olympics and Class of 2012 Athletes!!
