So who will take the cherished No1 slot for Christmas 2011? Let’s just hope and pray that it isn’t an Ode to Grandparents, in the form of Clive Dunn’s 1970 Xmas chart topper, ‘Grandad’ or ‘There’s no no-one quite like Grandma’ by St Winifred’s School Choir, which topped the pile for Christmas 1980!! Clearly the bookies’ favourite will be the X Factor winner, but who are the other contenders for the Xmas No1?

This year sees a stronger field than normal for contenders for the Christmas No1, including Military Wives, Joe McElderry, Michael Buble, the cast of The Only Way Is Essex, Amy Winehouse ( ‘Our Day Will Come’ ), Ed Sheeran / Adele and Coldplay ( ‘Christmas Lights’, could  possibly make a comeback this year ). My money is on Mariah Carey, who is duetting with Justin Bieber on a re-release of her festive classic, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ ).

A long shot, but my preferred choice  for Xmas No1 is the Wombles re-release of ‘Wombling Merry Christmas’, which narrowly missed the Christmas No1 spot in December 1974, when Mud’s tear filled eulogy to lost love, ‘Lonely this Christmas’ kept our furry friends from Wimbledon Common at bay at No2!! Maybe it’s just sentiment, but then again if you judge the song on it’s musical merits ( and forget the fact it’s the Wombles ), it’s a damn fine Mike Batt composition.

Whatever finally becomes Christmas No1 in 2011, it can’t be as bad as these previous Xmas No1’s –
