The auction bidding hammer has brought two of the world’s biggest music artists together as Lady Gaga has purchased 55 items from Michael Jackson’s costumes wardrobe at an auction in Los Angeles.
Along with jackets from Michael Jackson’s Dangerous and Thriller tours and a pair of jeans that went for $50,000 (£31,000), Lady Gaga invested in a jacket worn during Jackson’s Bad tour, that went for $240,000 (£148,000) and two crystal gloves. In excess of $5m (£3.1m) was raised by the sale, according to LA-based Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles.
Lady Gaga tweeted that the clothes would be “archived & expertly cared for in the spirit & love of Michael Jackson, his bravery, & fans worldwide”, echoing the sentiments of millions of adoring Michael Jackson fans around the world……Unfortunately the Recordpress author isn’t one of them!!……. I suspect that I am in a minority of one, but I just simply have never understood all the hype and euphoria surrounding Michael Jackson!!
As we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the release of Michael Jackson’s album “Bad”, although I’m not saying by any stretch of the imagination that Michael Jackson was a “bad” artist, I’m simply questioning
his “greatness”. Of course I recognise that Michael Jackson was a supreme singer, dancer and all around performer – that is unquestionable. But is the deification of this very sweet, vulnerable man totally justified?
In much the same way as the aforementioned Lady Gaga’s popularity has soared through the stratosphere in recent years, this deification goes beyond mere mortal talent and charisma. Just as the global public transformed the mortal, fallible Princess Diana into a Goddess, we witnessed Michael Jackson being turned into a God at the same time in the 1980s.Today, it is Lady Gaga’s turn.
The issue is less about the artists themselves, but more a statement about the celebrity culture that grips the world through the tenacious tentacles of the multi media platforms of television, the internet and social media. Infact Lady Gaga is a great example of being an exponent of Twitter, with in excess of 20 million followers!!
So yes I separate Michael Jackson the singer and dancer from Michael Jackson the global celebrity and by doing so I can see the “Emperor has no clothes”………
We invite a healthy debate on whether Michael Jackson was a God or a Mere Mortal. Please leave your thoughts and comments in the Reply Box below.
