Jack Bruce, bass guitarist from 1960s band Cream, has died aged 71.

Cream, were a trio completed by lead guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker. Although their time was short lived, Cream were regarded as a “super group”, the U2 of their day, based on their phenomenal album sales. Cream sold 35 million albums in just over two years and were given the first ever platinum disc for the album “Wheels of Fire”. That’s a phenomenal amount of record sales in such a short space of time……Jack Bruce’s Cream rose to the top very quickly and have stayed there ever since!!

Jack Bruce wrote and sang most of the Cream songs, including “I Feel Free”, “Sunshine Of Your Love” and “White Room”. Jack Bruce’s grounding and apprenticeship was impressive: he played in a number of blues bands throughout the early 1960s, including with Alexis Korner, John Mayall’s Blues Breakers and Manfred Mann before forming Cream with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker in 1966. Cream split in November 1968 at the height of their popularity, with Jack Bruce feeling he had wandered too far from his music philosophy. Cream briefly reformed in May 2005 for a series of concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Jack Bruce was never to be as commercially successful again post Cream, but his reputation as one of the best bass guitarists has continued to this day. Let’s pay tribute to Jack Bruce with this Record Press Top 5 Best Cream songs ( singles ) –
